Group riding: Cyclists exposure to road vehicle emissions in urban environments

نویسندگان

چکیده

A series of wind tunnel experiments were conducted in the University Surrey’s Environmental Flow with a 1:50 scale typical London street canyon to assess exposure cyclists riding group emissions polluting vehicles. propane source emitted from an Ahmed body was used model car exhaust and fast flame ionisation detector measure pollutant concentration around four for multiple configurations source, cyclists, directions. Two cases investigated vehicle driving front line adjacent them (as if it overtaking them). In first case, small incidence, findings confirm that decreases exponentially their distance dependence on direction but largely independently riders position within group. For large incidences, urban canyons, rider becomes more important. second set experiments, positioned riders, found be preferable regardless as this results lower pollutants. This is likely linked complex aerodynamic field generated by can trap fumes amongst hence increasing exposure. research suggests should considered when designing mitigation strategies minimise road traffic pollution environments, where busy narrow cycle lanes often line.

Physiological demands of off-road vehicle riding.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to characterize the physiological demands of recreational off-road vehicle riding under typical riding conditions using habitual recreational off-road vehicle riders (n = 128). METHODS Comparisons of the physical demands of off-road vehicle riding were made between vehicle types (all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and off-road motorcycle (ORM)) to the demands...

Vehicle-Based Road Dust Emissions Measurements

TRAKER is a vehicle-based method for measuring road dust emissions. Particulate matter is sampled in front and behind a vehicle’s tire and the difference in PM concentration (TRAKER signal) is used to infer the airborne flux of particles from the roadway. Two independent tests indicated that the TRAKER signal increases as the cube of the speed for a given road dust loading. Simultaneous measure...

Heavy metals from non-exhaust vehicle emissions in urban and motorway road dusts

The main sources of non-exhaust vehicular emissions that contribute to road dust are tire, brake and clutch wear, road surface wear, and other vehicle and road component degradation. This study is an attempt to identify and investigate heavy metals in urban and motorway road dusts as well as in dust from brake linings and tires. Road dust was collected from sections of the A-4 motorway in Polan...

Model Based Vehicle Tracking in Urban Environments

Situational awareness is crucial for autonomous driving in urban environments. We present the moving vehicle tracking module we developed for our autonomous driving robot Junior. The robot won second place in the Urban Grand Challenge, an autonomous driving race organized by the U.S. Government in 2007. The module provides reliable detection and tracking of moving vehicles from a high-speed mov...
